Reels on Instagram are short videos (up to 90 seconds) that appear in the Feed and in a dedicated tab. They're a great way to reach new audiences and stand out in the algorithm. This guide shows you exactly how to open, record, and publish Reels.

When to use Reels

  • When you want to show a process, tip, or short story in video form.
  • When you want to reach new followers (Reels get exposure even to people who don't follow you).
  • When you prefer short, easy-to-watch content over long posts.

Steps to create Reels

  1. Open Instagram and log in. Tap + at the bottom (or "Reels" if you're already in the Reels area).

  2. Select "Reels" from the options (on the right or in the menu). The recording screen will open.

  3. Set the length – at the top you can choose 15, 30, 60, or 90 seconds. Pick based on what you're filming.

  4. Record or upload – tap the red button to record, or upload a video from your gallery (gallery icon).

  5. Edit if needed – trim, add text, stickers, and music. You can also add effects from the "Effects" tab.

  6. Add a caption and hashtags – write an engaging caption and add relevant hashtags (e.g. #reels #instagram).

  7. Share – select "Share to Reels" (not just to Story). You can also share to Feed if you want.

Common mistakes

  • Reels that are too long without value – if there's no progress or story, people will leave. Shorter and clearer is better.
  • No caption or text – text on screen helps viewers who watch without sound.
  • Irrelevant hashtags – hashtags help with discovery. Choose search terms people actually look for.
  • Publishing only to Story – if you don't tap "Share to Reels", the Reel won't appear in the Reels Feed and won't get broad exposure.

Summary

Creating Reels on Instagram starts with tapping + and selecting "Reels", then recording or uploading, light editing, caption and hashtags – and finally "Share to Reels". Consistency will help the algorithm show you to more people.
