How to save Reels as a draft on Instagram
Saving Reels as drafts – where drafts are stored, how to publish later and when drafts are removed.
Last updated: February 10, 2026
You save Reels as drafts when you want to finish editing without publishing right away – e.g. to check again, add a caption or publish at a different time. The process is simple.
When it's useful
- You haven't finished editing – Caption, hashtags or one more effect.
- You want to publish at a specific time – Save as draft and publish when your audience is active.
- You want to show someone before publishing – The draft stays with you until you choose to publish.
How to save Reels as draft – step by step
-
Prepare the Reel – Record or upload video, edit (text, music, effects) as you want.
-
On the "Share to Reels" screen – After editing, you're on the screen with caption, hashtags and profile selection. Don't tap "Share" yet.
-
Go back – Tap the arrow or "Back" in the corner. Instagram will offer to save as draft – choose "Save draft" or "Save draft."
-
Where to find drafts – Go to Reels (Reels tab or +), and at the top or in the menu you'll see "Drafts" / "Drafts." Your Reel is saved there.
-
Publish later – Open the draft, check caption and hashtags, and tap "Share to Reels."
Common mistakes
- Tapping "Delete" instead of "Save" – Make sure you choose save draft, not cancel.
- Assuming drafts last forever – Better to publish or export to gallery if content matters; app updates or deletion can affect drafts.
- Keeping many drafts – They take storage. Delete what you don't need.
Summary
Save Reels as draft by going back from the "Share to Reels" screen and choosing "Save draft." Drafts are in the Reels area under "Drafts." Open, update if needed and publish.
