How to remove restrictions or blocks on Instagram

Want to unblock someone, remove comment restrictions or change other limits? Most settings are under Privacy and Account. Here's how.

When it's relevant

• Block – You blocked someone and want to allow access again.
• Comment restrictions – You limited who can comment (e.g. "Followers only") and want to broaden it.
• Instagram restrictions – Automatic limits (e.g. on comments) – sometimes you can appeal or wait.

How to remove restrictions and blocks – step by step

1. Unblock – Search for the person (username). Go to their profile > Menu (three dots) > Unblock / Unblock. From that moment they can see your profile and posts again. Account settings.

2. Blocked list – Settings > Privacy > Blocked accounts (or Blocked accounts). You'll see a list of blocked users. Next to each – "Unblock."

3. Comment restrictions – Settings > Privacy > Comments (Comments). Choose "Everyone" or "Followers" (not "People you follow" or "Everyone except [list]"). Save.

4. Story visibility limits – Settings > Privacy > Stories. If you have "Hide story from" – go in and remove people from the list so they can see again.

5. Instagram restriction (e.g. on activity) – If you got a message about a restriction, there's usually an "Appeal" or "Learn more" button. Follow the instructions. Temporary restrictions usually expire after the time shown in the message.

Common mistakes

• Looking for "Unblock" on your own profile – You unblock from their profile, not yours.
• Ignoring privacy settings – Comment and Story restrictions are in Privacy. Worth reviewing.
• Expecting them to get a notification – Instagram doesn't notify about unblocking.
