How to reset Instagram account settings

Reset or change Instagram settings – Privacy, Notifications, Security and Account. What to reset and how to do it step by step.

Last updated: February 10, 2026

Want to reset or change Instagram settings – Privacy, Notifications, blocks or Security? There's no single "Reset all" button – you go section by section and adjust. Here's how.

When it's relevant

  • Settings got messed up – You changed a lot and want to restore order.
  • Privacy – Limit who sees, who can comment and who can message.
  • Notifications – Reduce or increase notifications as needed.
  • Security – Password, logins, two-factor authentication.

How to reset / change settings – step by step

  1. Open Settings – Profile > Menu (three lines) > Settings and privacy / Settings.

  2. Privacy – Settings > Privacy (Privacy). Here: blocks, comment restrictions, who can message, who can see Stories, private account. Change each setting as needed. Unblocking.

  3. Notifications – Settings > Notifications (Notifications). Choose which notifications to get (likes, comments, messages, Stories) and on which channel (app, email). Turn on or off as you prefer.

  4. Security – Settings > Security (Security). Password, two-factor authentication, login history. Two-factor is recommended.

  5. Account – Settings > Account (Account). Account type (personal/professional), password change, language. If there's "Reset to recommended settings" or "Restore recommended settings" – it restores Privacy/Notifications recommendations; doesn't delete posts.

  6. Don't delete account by mistake – "Delete account" is in Settings; deletion removes everything. If you only want to "reset" – don't tap Delete account.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking reset deletes content – Changing settings doesn't touch posts, Reels or followers. Only account deletion does.
  • Skipping Privacy – Worth checking blocks, comments and Stories periodically.
  • Ignoring Security – Two-factor helps prevent hacks.

Summary

There's no single reset for all settings. Go to: Settings > Privacy, Notifications, Security, Account – and change each section. "Restore to recommendations" (if available) restores Privacy/Notifications only. Doesn't delete content.
