How to create a business profile on Instagram
Convert your account to a business or creator profile – steps, benefits (Insights, Story link, category) and settings.
Last updated: January 23, 2024
A Business or Creator profile on Instagram opens access to advanced Insights, Story links, profile category (e.g. "Content creator" or "Store") and more. Conversion is simple and doesn't affect followers or posts. This guide shows you how to do it.
When it's useful
- When you have a business, brand or create content and want Insights and Story links.
- When you want to monetize (collaborations, sales) and look professional.
- When you have a Facebook page (for Business) or are ready to create one if needed.
Steps to convert to Business/Creator
-
Open Settings – In Instagram: Profile > Menu (three lines) > Settings and privacy.
-
Choose "Account type" – Account > "Switch to professional account" / "Switch to professional account" (depending on your language).
-
Choose a category – Instagram suggests categories (food, beauty, creator, etc.). Pick the most relevant – you can change it later.
-
Choose Business or Creator – Business for brand/store/service; Creator for content creators/influencers. Tap "Next" / "Continue".
-
Connect Facebook page (if required) – Business accounts sometimes need a Facebook page. If you don't have one – create a basic page or choose Creator instead.
-
Complete details (optional) – Address, phone, email. Not required for all accounts but helps credibility.
-
Done – The account is now professional. In Insights you'll see stats; in Stories you can add links; in your profile the category appears.
Common mistakes
- Thinking it will "unlock" your account – Conversion doesn't change the algorithm or follower count. It's just more tools.
- Choosing the wrong category – The category appears on your profile. Pick something that describes you correctly.
- Skipping contact details – If you want brands or clients to reach you, details in the Contact section help.
- Using Business if you're fully personal – If the account is purely personal, Creator is better and looks less "commercial."
Summary
Convert to Business/Creator: Settings > Switch to professional account > Choose category > Business or Creator > Connect Facebook if needed. After conversion you get access to Insights, Story links and profile category.
